Born in Luanda and living in Porto, Alexandra Novo is a journalist, communicator, and marketer, as well as the brain and heart behind AWA Ceramics. A free and curious spirit, she is driven by the possibilities of the new.
AWA, meaning “spirit of the earth” in Kimbundu (an African language spoken in northwest Angola), bridges ancestral essence with the future. It embodies the idea that the world, nature, and human beings are in constant motion and transformation. Inspired by the hypnotic dance of American actress and performer Loie Fuller, its ceramic objects and adornments explore the possibilities of the unpredictable. With its plasticity and organic nature, clay becomes the material metaphor for existence, shaped by a breeze, a breath, the wind, or even a hurricane.
